Mumbai: In three different cases of drug smuggling, the Customs arrested six persons, including two Thai women, for smuggling around 12 kgs of marijuana/weed worth ₹26 crores from Bangkok. Four of the youths arrested said they were unaware of the contraband and were fooled by the syndicates.

In the first case, the Air Intelligence Unit at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, on Saturday intercepted two Thai women, identified as Supatsara Sunawong and Rungnapa Munprakob, on suspicion that they were carrying some narcotic substances. The two women arrived from Bangkok. The duo was carrying a silver bag containing personal belongings, and upon opening it, the officials found plastic packets containing the fruiting and flowering tops of the plant, which was purported to be marijuana or weed. Testing the same with the first test kit confirmed it was hydroponic weed (cannabis) weighing around 18 kgs, worth Rs 18.44 crores. Their advocate, Prabhakar Tripathi, told the court that his clients were unaware of the contents of the parcel. Both were remanded to judicial custody.

In another case, a Mumbra resident, Mohammed Shaikh, who arrived from Bangkok, was intercepted on suspicion that he was carrying some narcotic substance. Checking his baggage resulted in the recovery of 3.976 kgs of greenish-coloured dry leafy substances, purported to be ganja. In a similar case, a 33-year-old identified as Saeeda Akhlaq Zari, a Thane resident who arrived from Bangkok, was intercepted, and checking her baggage resulted in the recovery of 4 kgs of weed or ganja worth Rs 4 crores.
